The Tens of EDH 6: Budget Replacements

Outlaws of Thunder Junction was the second premier set of the year. It suffered from some of the same flaws as Murders at Karlov Manor, including overused tropes, but once again delivered a plethora of noteworthy cards to Constructed and Commander alike. Tortured Existence – Insane card if you have reanimation schemes. Plus it allows you to cheat on commander tax if you allow the commander to go to the graveyard and have something to discard for it. Gustha’s Scepter and Ice Cauldron are great cards for any deck that does a lot of wheeling. Plus even if you remove ice cauldron, you can still play the exiled cards.

This has allowed the card to reach players’ hands, however, it is still regularly seen around the $20 mark. I’m an avid commander player with a knack for deck building. I’ve played commander since its genesis and have loved it ever since. If you ever want to talk about commander feel free to contact me at Compiling this list was a lot more difficult that I thought. Commander is such a diverse format where anything is possible and it’s very difficult to narrow such a large chunk of quality cards down to ‘best five’.

Especially if you can have it attack without actually declaring it as an attacker.

Secure the right cards in foundation with the best pauper commanders available. Sadly, it looks as if you completely ignored my other comment and just took offense to me calling Altar of Shadows niche. Which is a shame, because I did find the article helpful. Also worth noting, even though you have it under Targeted Removal, Council’s Judgment doesn’t actually target. The voting part can make it rough in multiplayer, but usually people can figure out to exile the Avacyn, Angel of Hope or whatever other problematic thing is on the table. Pointing out that cards are bad is not a personal attack on the writer.

MTG Card Analysis: Hidden Gems and Powerful Staples

This allows you to get any four mana spells from your deck! Maybe you want to start locking down the game with a Grave Pact. Dimir House Guard is a surprisingly flexible sacrifice outlet. This does a pretty good impersonation of Force for mtg card the cost of discarding an Island, and any other card.

Amzu is an amazing card for the Insect creature type. Insects are often moving in and out of the graveyard, making Amzu the perfect support card for it. Since it’s legendary, you can run it as a dedicated Insect commander or simply one that interacts with the graveyard and acts more like a token commander.

List of Modern Staples and Power Cards

Many sets have a handful of strong cards in them, so we will make sure to bring up any that were in close contention. After browsing decklists, comments, etc, I’ve came upon some random old EDH cards that are actually really good. I know there are a few article series about things like this, such as Dig Through Time by EDHREC. Heroic Intervention is an awesome way to protect a huge board in a pinch.

What the addition of green helps with the most is the ability to answer problematic permanents that black historically has a problem with. Mono-Black Midrange struggles against decks like Selesnya Enchantments, because the deck is simply incapable of removing opposing Enchantments. By adding green, you get access to cards like Tranquil Frillback and Fade from History that can cleanly deal with opposing Artifacts and Enchantments. Nadu’s ability is incredible, so long as you can create new creatures, you can constantly make use of it. There are a lot of effects that don’t cost mana to activate, making it trivial to allow Nadu to draw out your entire deck. Pre-War Formalwear reanimates any cheap creature from your graveyard while giving it a stat and ability boost thanks to the actual effects of the Equipment.

Commander manipulates the rules of Magic in such a way that card quality must be assessed completely differently than in any other format. There are many key factors that affect the quality of a card in Commander. The multiplayer nature, starting life total of 40, and bizarre deck requirements are just a few.

We ended up ranking Soulstone Sanctuary at the top based on how many archetypes the card sees play in. It’s a Standard staple, showing up in all sorts of decks like Dimir midrange and even red Prowess shells. The fact that it stays a creature forever once you animate it is a huge deal. Vein Ripper was far from the only card to make noise in Constructed from the set.

Latest Magic Sets

Off the top of my head, Corpsehatch is about a thousand times better if you’re looking for a removal spell that makes mana. There’s probably some even better card I’m forgetting. There are a lot of genuinely terrible cards mentioned in this post and a lot of great budget cards were overlooked, but I suppose it will still help people get the idea. Of course, each of the three transmute options also fit into other categories as well, such as counterspells (which is what makes them better than usher).

While you do state Ethereal Usher as a tutor, you’ve neglected to mention the better Transmute options, namely Muddle the Mixture, Perplex and Clutch of the Undercity. Right away, you get to Unearth a small creature of your choice. Luckily, the stat boost from the equipment goes a long way towards making your puny creature a legitimate threat. From there, you’re free to move around the equipment as you wish. Someone at my FNM runs a Karona, False God deck that plans to stall the game out for eternity, and Constant Mists is the most annoying card ever.
